What Is UKD (National Strength Rating)?

UKD is the abbreviation of Ulusal Kuvvet Derecesi (National Strength Rating). It is the national rating system managed by the Turkish Chess Federation (TSF) that measures the strength level of chess players in Turkey. It can be thought of as Turkey's own equivalent of the global FIDE ELO system.

📅 Update
The 1st of every month

The UKD system is based on the Elo rating methodology developed by Hungarian-born American physics professor Arpad Elo. The basic principle is simple: if you defeat a strong opponent, you gain many points; if you lose to a weak opponent, you lose many points.

🎓 Coach's Note: The UKD rating is the starting point of your chess journey in Turkey. Most Turkish chess players first obtain a UKD rating, then acquire a FIDE ELO rating by participating in international tournaments. The two systems are independent of each other, and you can have both at the same time.

id="ukd-fide-fark">Differences Between UKD and FIDE ELO

In Turkey, someone who plays chess is often confused by the question "UKD or ELO?". Here are the main differences between the two systems:

Feature UKD (National) FIDE ELO (International)
Governing Organization TSF (Turkish Chess Federation) FIDE (World Chess Federation)
Scope of Validity Only in Turkey Worldwide (200+ countries)
Counted Tournaments TSF-approved domestic tournaments FIDE-approved international tournaments
Update Frequency 1st of every month 1st of every month (also updated daily)
License Requirement TSF athlete license FIDE ID + TSF license
Title Validity National classification (1st, 2nd, 3rd category) International titles (GM, IM, FM, CM)
Initial Rating Requirement At least 5-9 games against rated UKD players At least 5 FIDE-rated games
Lookup ukd.tsf.org.tr fideidsorgulama.com
⚖️ Arbiter's Note: A tournament can be both UKD-rated and FIDE-rated at the same time. In this case, the games you play update both systems. The tournament announcement will always specify "FIDE-rated" and/or "UKD-rated." As arbiters, when reporting the tournament, we send separate reports to each system.

Important: The same player's UKD rating and FIDE ELO rating may be different. The reason is that the two systems are based on different player pools and tournaments. In general, for strong players the two ratings are close to each other; however, at lower levels, UKD tends to be higher than FIDE ELO.

How to Get a UKD Rating? (Step by Step)

TSF license application - preparing documents for chess tournament registration
To obtain a UKD rating, you must first get a TSF athlete license.

Getting your first UKD rating is easier than you think. Here is the step-by-step process:

1

Obtain a TSF Athlete License

The first step is to obtain an athlete license from the Turkish Chess Federation. The documents required for first-time applicants are:

  • Medical Report (a referral can be created via e-Government)
  • Parental Consent Form (for athletes under 18 — can be created via e-Government, no physical printout required)
  • 1 Photograph
  • For a club license: an approved document showing affiliation with the club

The license process is completed by submitting the prepared documents to the Provincial or District Directorates of Youth and Sports.

2

Complete the Visa Procedure (Every Season)

You must have your license validated every season. The required documents for validation are:

  • Medical Report
  • Parental Consent Form (for those under 18)
  • For club validation: a document showing affiliation with the club
  • Validation fee receipt: ₺305.00 must be deposited into the TSF license account (IBAN: TR82 0006 4000 0014 2005 9308 38). The receipt description must include the Turkish ID number and full name.

Those exempt from the validation fee: children of martyrs, those staying in Love Homes and Children's Homes, those with a disability report of 40% or more, and athletes over the age of 65. In addition, students under 18 (not yet turned 19) obtaining a license through a school sports club are entitled to free licensing and validation upon presenting a student certificate.

Play At Least 5-9 Rated Games

In order for your first UKD rating to be calculated, you need to play a sufficient number of rated games. Generally, 5 to 9 games are enough. Your opponents' current UKD ratings in these games are used to calculate your first rating.

Attention: It is mandatory that all players in the tournament have a valid TSF license. Tournaments that include unlicensed players are not included in UKD calculation.

5

Get Your First UKD Rating

Tournament results are reported to TSF by the provincial representative, and your first UKD rating is calculated according to your performance rating. This calculation takes the following into account:

  • Your opponents' current UKD ratings
  • Your game results (win, draw, loss)
  • Your estimated strength level based on the performance formula

Your first rating will appear in the updated UKD list on the 1st of the following month.

Athletes who will obtain a club license must obtain the approved document showing their affiliation with the club from their clubs.
💡 Coach's Tip: Prepare yourself for your first tournament! Train regularly for at least 2-3 months, solve tactical puzzles, and learn a few openings. If your first UKD rating is high, it will be easier to raise it later. Because your K-factor is high at the beginning (K=40) and you can gain rating quickly.

UKD Calculation Formula

UKD uses the standard Elo rating formula. After each game, your rating is updated with the following formula:

New UKD = Old UKD + K × (S − E)
K = Development coefficient
S = Actual score (1 / 0.5 / 0)
E = Expected score

How Is the Expected Score (E) Calculated?

The expected score between two players is calculated according to the rating difference:

E = 1 / (1 + 10(Opponent UKD − Player UKD) / 400)

In this formula, the constant 400 determines how the rating difference is converted into expected performance. As the rating difference grows, the stronger player's probability of winning increases.

Real Score (S) Values

Result S Value
✅ Win (You won) 1
🤝 Draw 0.5
❌ Loss (You lost) 0

K-Factor (Development Coefficient)

The K-factor is the multiplier that determines how much your UKD rating changes after each game. The higher K is, the faster the rating changes. The TSF UKD system applies the following K-factor rules:

K Value For Whom? Explanation
K=40 New players (first ~30 rated games) Allows the rating to converge quickly to actual strength. Young players also start in this category.
K=20 Players with a UKD rating below 2400 Standard development rate. Most tournament players are in this category.
K=10 Players with a UKD rating of 2400 and above Provides stability for master-level players. The rating changes more slowly.
⚠️ Why is the K-factor important? If you are a new player (K=40), you gain 2 times more points for each win — but you also lose 2 times more with each loss. This allows your rating to reach your true strength quickly. That is why performing well in your first tournaments is critically important!

Detailed Calculation Examples

Chess pieces and analysis - example of the UKD calculation formula
Your UKD rating is recalculated after each game according to the formula.

Let's understand the formula with concrete examples:

Example 1: Beating a stronger opponent

Situation: Your UKD = 1500, Opponent's UKD = 1700, K = 20

Step 1 — Expected score:

E = 1 / (1 + 10(1700−1500)/400) = 1 / (1 + 100.5) = 1 / (1 + 3.162) = 0.24

Your expected score is 0.24 — that is, a 24% chance of winning.

Step 2 — You won! (S = 1):

New UKD = 1500 + 20 × (1 − 0.24) = 1500 + 20 × 0.76 = 1500 + 15.2 = 1515

✅ Result: You gained +15 points! Beating a strong opponent earns many points.

Example 2: Losing to a weaker opponent

Situation: Your UKD = 1500, Opponent's UKD = 1300, K = 20

Step 1 — Expected score:

E = 1 / (1 + 10(1300−1500)/400) = 1 / (1 + 10-0.5) = 1 / (1 + 0.316) = 0.76

Your expected score is 0.76 — that is, a 76% chance of winning.

Step 2 — You lost! (S = 0):

New UKD = 1500 + 20 × (0 − 0.76) = 1500 + 20 × (−0.76) = 1500 − 15.2 = 1485

❌ Result: You lost -15 points! Losing to a weak opponent costs many points.

Example 3: Draw

Situation: Your UKD = 1500, Opponent's UKD = 1600, K = 20

Step 1 — Expected score:

E = 1 / (1 + 10(1600−1500)/400) = 1 / (1 + 100.25) = 1 / (1 + 1.778) = 0.36

Step 2 — You drew (S = 0.5):

New UKD = 1500 + 20 × (0.5 − 0.36) = 1500 + 20 × 0.14 = 1500 + 2.8 = 1503

🤝 Result: You gained +3 points! Even a draw against a stronger opponent earns points.
