Outpost is a strong square that cannot be controlled by enemy pawns and is protected by one or more friendly pawns.

Ideal Use

• Knights are especially strong on outposts.
• Outposts in enemy territory (on the 5th or 6th rank) are the most valuable.
• A knight on an outpost is often more effective than the opponent's bishop.
