Philidor Position

Philidor Position is one of the most fundamental structures in rook endings, where the defending side preserves a draw with correctly timed defense.
Defensive Idea
- The rook waits on the third rank, limiting the advance of the opposing king.
- Once the pawn advances too far, the defending rook begins checking from the side or from behind.
- If the attacking side cannot find time to build a bridge, the position remains drawn.
This position shows that many rook endings that look winning can in fact be defended.
