A United Effort for Chess in Bursa
Turkish Chess Federation President Fethi Apaydın, accompanied by Bursa Provincial Director of Youth and Sports Rahmi Aksoy and Federation Education Board Member Fatih Türk, paid a visit to Bursa Governor Erol Ayyıldız at his office. During the meeting, key topics included bringing chess to wider audiences in Bursa, strengthening grassroots efforts, and especially promoting chess culture among children and young people. Beyond being a courtesy visit, the meeting also stood out for the potential contributions that inter-institutional cooperation could make to the sport of chess.
It is understood that the discussion emphasized chess’s impact on strategic thinking, patience, planning, and decision-making skills. For Turkish chess, which has gained significant momentum in recent years in many areas ranging from school sports and local tournaments to coach education and talent identification, the support of local administrations and public institutions is of great importance. In a city like Bursa, with strong potential in both sport and education, coordinated efforts are expected to contribute both to the number of licensed players and to an increase in high-quality events.
Bursa has the capacity to become an important chess hub thanks to its strong school network, active sports clubs, and young population. In this context, it would not be surprising to see issues such as school tournaments, candidate arbiter and coach training, province-level tournaments, and early support for talented players receive greater attention in the coming period. For sustainable success in chess, it is critically important not only to develop elite players but also to build a broad-based structure supported by the right educational model.
The overall message of the visit points to chess being not only a sport, but also a field of development with strong educational and social dimensions. The Turkish Chess Federation’s engagement with local stakeholders is laying the groundwork for stronger city-based projects and for chess to move forward with a more solid organizational structure. While the Federation delegation thanked Bursa Governor Erol Ayyıldız for his warm welcome and hospitality, the chess community will be closely watching to see these kinds of contacts turn into concrete projects in the period ahead.
