Chess Excitement in Manisa: 2nd Mesir International Open Begins with Strong Participation

An international chess gathering in Manisa

The 2nd Mesir International Open Chess Tournament has begun in Manisa with broad participation. A total of 230 players from 20 countries have registered for the event, including 32 titled players. This picture shows that the tournament has grown into an event that attracts attention not only locally but also within the international chess calendar. Bringing together players from different countries and chess cultures at the same boards adds significant depth to the tournament in terms of both technical level and competitive strength.

Before the international open, the 2nd Mesir Chess Tournament also demonstrated how strong the foundation of the overall organization is. Held at the national level on April 18-19, this section featured 178 players from 15 different cities. In this way, Manisa was not only a host city for foreign participants, but also a meeting point for chess players from across Türkiye under one roof through a multi-layered event. For young players in particular, such tournaments are highly valuable for facing strong opponents, testing opening preparation, and gaining practical tournament experience.

The tournament was organized within the framework of a cooperation protocol signed between the Turkish Chess Federation and the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality. The opening ceremony was attended by Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Besim Dutlulu, municipal executives, Turkish Chess Federation Board Member Olcay Ak Nalbant, Head of the Organizations Committee Mehmet Sarısaç, and Head of the Education Committee Gürkan Aydeniz. This attendance highlights that chess is regarded not only as a sport, but also as a field supported through education, culture, and city promotion. Such cooperation between metropolitan municipalities and federations both raises organizational standards and helps chess reach wider audiences.

By their nature, open tournaments are often the stage for surprises and fierce competition. For titled players, norms and performance targets come to the forefront, while for developing competitors each round becomes an important learning opportunity. In this respect, the 2nd Mesir International Open Chess Tournament is not merely an arena where standings are contested; it is also a valuable platform where new talents can make their mark and the international visibility of Turkish chess can increase. Combined with Manisa’s historical and cultural identity, this event is expected to grow even stronger in the coming years and become a traditional stop on the chess calendar.
