A renewed push for chess in correctional institutions
The FIDE Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners are set to return in May 2026 for their second edition. Spanning four continents, the event remains one of the most notable pillars of the International Chess Federation’s Chess for Freedom programme. Through this initiative, FIDE aims not only to provide a competitive arena for people in correctional institutions, but also to support intellectual growth, self-discipline, decision-making skills, and social reintegration through chess.
The inaugural continental online championships, held in May 2025, marked an important milestone by bringing together prison teams from different parts of the world on a shared chess platform. That first edition showed how chess can create connection, structure and constructive purpose even under difficult circumstances. Encouraged by those positive results, FIDE is now working to establish the continental tournaments as a regular fixture complementing its already established intercontinental events.
The 2026 edition will once again feature separate regional competitions. Each continental championship will be played over a single day, with teams from correctional institutions in the relevant region competing online on Chess.com. Depending on the number of registered teams, the tournament format will be either round-robin or Swiss, ensuring both competitive balance and broad participation. FIDE is calling on national federations and prison authorities to complete registrations promptly, while countries that run national prison chess championships may also be able to enter additional teams, widening access to regional competition.
The championships will use a rapid time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move. This format helps maintain the flow of an online event while still giving players meaningful thinking time. Fair play standards, technical supervision and security procedures will be closely monitored by FIDE and its partners. In recent years, prison chess initiatives have drawn increasing attention not only for their sporting dimension, but also for their educational and social impact. For that reason, the 2026 Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners stand not merely as a tournament, but as an international platform highlighting the transformative power of chess.
