Humpy Koneru Withdraws from the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, Anna Muzychuk Replaces Her
A notable lineup change has taken place ahead of the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. Humpy Koneru, one of India’s strongest grandmasters, has officially withdrawn from the event, which will be held in Cyprus from March 28 to April 16. In accordance with the provisions of the FIDE tournament regulations, the vacant spot was offered to the highest-finishing player in the Women’s Events Series 2024–25 standings who had not yet qualified by another route, and as a result Anna Muzychuk has joined the tournament field.
The procedure announced by FIDE is of major importance in ensuring fairness and predictability in top-level events of this kind. Under the relevant article of the regulations, the withdrawing player’s place is filled directly by the reserve player; in other words, the pairing system will not be rebuilt from scratch, and Anna Muzychuk will take Humpy Koneru’s place directly. The chief arbiter is expected to announce the updated pairings shortly. This approach helps keep the tournament as stable as possible for players who prepare against specific opponent profiles.
From a sporting perspective, this change may give the event a different character rather than reducing its competitive level. Humpy Koneru has long been regarded as one of the most consistent figures in women’s chess, standing out in particular for her solid opening repertoire, technical endgame skill, and low error rate. Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk, on the other hand, is considered one of the toughest opponents thanks to her dynamic and versatile playing style. With extensive elite-level experience in both rapid and classical time controls, Muzychuk’s addition to the field could lead to sharper and more complex battles, especially in the middlegame.
The Women’s Candidates Tournament is one of the most prestigious stops on the chess calendar because it is among the most critical stages on the road to the world championship. The player who succeeds in this event earns the right to play in the Women’s World Championship match. As a result, even a single player change can affect both preparation and the overall balance of strength in the tournament. For that reason, the event in Cyprus will be closely followed not only for its results, but also for its lineup and pairing balance. FIDE has already made the official tournament website and ticket sales channels available, and with the start of the event approaching, attention now turns to the updated schedule and the players’ final preparations.
