Mesir Spirit Crowned by Chess in Manisa: 2nd International Mesir Open Concludes

The 2nd International Mesir Open Chess Tournament, organized by Manisa Metropolitan Municipality in cooperation with the Turkish Chess Federation as part of the 486th International Mesir Festival, has come to an end. The event stood out not only for its final results but also for its broad participation and strong competitive level. A total of 230 players from 20 different countries took part in the tournament, including 32 titled players. This picture showed that the Manisa event is already beginning to secure a solid place for itself on the international chess calendar.

Before the main event, the 2nd Mesir Chess Tournament, held on April 18-19, further strengthened the event’s contribution to the chess community. With 178 players from 15 cities, this section provided an important competitive platform especially for young and developing players. From opening preparation and middlegame planning to critical choices in time trouble and endgame technique, the games featured serious battles in many phases of play, once again demonstrating how widely chess can attract interest when combined with the atmosphere of a major cultural festival.

Implemented within the framework of a protocol signed between the Turkish Chess Federation and Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, the event’s closing ceremony brought together representatives of both the chess world and local government. Among those attending were Turkish Chess Federation Honorary President Gülkız Tulay, federation board members, tournament coordinators, and municipal officials. Their presence underlined that the tournament is seen not only as a sporting event, but also as an important project for city promotion, sports tourism, and the development of local chess infrastructure. In particular, the gathering of players from different cities and countries reinforced Manisa’s ambition to become not just a regional, but an international meeting point for chess.

Throughout the tournament, spectators followed high-level and hard-fought games. The prepared opening choices of titled players, their maneuvers to increase positional pressure, and their ability to seize tactical chances offered a true chess spectacle. In the overall standings, GM Vugar Rasulov took first place, while GM Nikita Afanasiev finished second and GM Vitaly Sivuk came third. Among the highlighted players, Ali Arda Eracar placed first, Can Göktan Kara was second, and WCM Shohina Akhmedova finished third in their category. A total prize fund of 1.1 million TL, along with trophies and medals, was awarded to the top finishers. The results clearly showed that the event is becoming a prestigious platform for both elite players and rising talents.
