A Historic Display by SC Viernheim
SC Viernheim brought the 2025/26 Chess Bundesliga season to a close with a truly flawless performance. By winning all 15 team matches they played, Viernheim captured the title with a perfect 30/30 match points and secured the second Bundesliga championship in club history. Based in Viernheim, a mid-sized industrial town in the Rhine-Neckar area near Mannheim, the club had previously reached the top in the 2023/24 season, also with an immaculate record. This latest triumph confirmed once again that Viernheim have become a lasting force in Germany’s strongest team chess competition.
After finishing second in the previous season behind Düsseldorfer SK, Viernheim returned to the summit this year. They entered the final weekend in Berlin 3 match points ahead of OSG Baden-Baden and made no mistakes in the last three rounds. Their victory in the direct showdown against Baden-Baden, one of the key encounters in the title race, effectively settled the championship battle. Over the course of the season, Viernheim’s success was shaped not only by the quality of their star players, but also by their ability to grind out results in closely contested matches.
OSG Baden-Baden and Sfr. Wolfhagen finished the season level on match points, but second place was decided by tiebreaks, which favored Baden-Baden. As a result, one of German team chess’s traditional powerhouses claimed the runner-up spot, while Wolfhagen had to settle for third. There was also an important development affecting the league structure: after Wolfhagen announced that it would withdraw its team for the 2026/27 season, Sfr. Berlin retained its place in the top division.
Viernheim’s championship run once again highlighted how decisive consistency, squad depth, and composure under pressure are in modern team chess. In a league as competitive as the Bundesliga, where elite grandmasters battle on every board, an unbeaten season represents far more than just finishing first—it is a statement of strength. A streak of 15 wins in 15 matches stands as powerful evidence of why Viernheim have carved out a special place for themselves in recent years in top-level European team chess.
