Sindarov storms to the Candidates title

Javokhir Sindarov secured overall victory at the Candidates Tournament in Cyprus by drawing with Anish Giri in round 13, wrapping up first place with one round to spare. The 20-year-old grandmaster from Tashkent once again displayed the calm, well-prepared and highly practical style that defined his campaign from start to finish. By collecting the half point he needed to seal qualification, Sindarov earned the right to face Gukesh Dommaraju for the World Championship later this year.

In the marquee game of the day, Giri emerged from the opening with a slightly more active position and some scope to press. Sindarov, however, never allowed the initiative to grow into anything dangerous. With accurate defensive play and well-timed simplification, he steered the game into a rook endgame where White had no realistic winning chances. Giri kept probing for a while, but Sindarov remained precise and secure, converting the position into the draw that was enough to clinch the tournament.

The result is notable not only because it decided first place, but also because it stands out in the history of the modern Candidates. Since the double round-robin format was introduced in 2013, few winners have looked this convincing after 13 rounds. Sindarov reached six wins and seven draws, staying undefeated while also posting one of the strongest win totals of the era. His final-round result against Wei Yi could further enhance the statistical weight of an already outstanding performance.

Wei Yi scored the only decisive result of round 13, a game that mattered for the middle and lower parts of the standings. Even so, the day clearly belonged to Sindarov. The young Uzbek star impressed not only with opening preparation, but also with his speed, confidence and practical judgment in key moments. To secure first place before the final round in an event as demanding and psychologically intense as the Candidates is a major statement: Sindarov is no longer just a rising talent, but a fully mature contender ready for a world title match.
