The picture becomes clearer as the FIDE Candidates enters the final stretch
Round 11 of the FIDE Candidates proved highly valuable for leader Javokhir Sindarov, as all games in the open section ended in draws. With only three rounds remaining, the young grandmaster preserved his two-point advantage and is now edging ever closer not only to tournament victory, but also to the right to challenge for the World Championship if he maintains his stability. Played at the Cap St. Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus, the round was especially important because it left the balance at the top unchanged.
The most anticipated game of the day was undoubtedly Fabiano Caruana vs Javokhir Sindarov. Caruana chose the relatively fresh idea of 11.Be3 in the main lines of the Catalan Opening, aiming to test his opponent early in the preparation battle. The concept involves a short-term pawn sacrifice in exchange for long-term positional pressure and the initiative. Once again, Caruana’s deep opening work drew attention, but Sindarov defended with remarkable composure at the critical moments, returned the pawn at exactly the right time, and secured the draw. In tournament practice, such defensive efforts often mean more than half a point, because the leader not only survives danger but also preserves the psychological edge by forcing his rivals to take risks elsewhere.
The other boards in Round 11 also remained balanced, and the overall standings in the open event did not change significantly. Those results clearly favored the player in front, since in a long and exhausting event like the Candidates, entering the final stretch with a lead is only half the battle; protecting that edge without taking unnecessary risks is often what decides the title. Sindarov’s performance so far has highlighted not just his creative play, but also his excellent tournament management. His defensive quality under pressure, along with his willingness to simplify at the right moments, has strengthened his credentials as the leading favorite.
In the Women’s Candidates, the standout result of the round came from Vaishali R. Her crucial victory with the black pieces against Aleksandra Goryachkina gave her clear sole first place by a full point. Heading into the final rounds, that margin represents not only a scoreboard advantage but also a major psychological boost. Defeating such an experienced and resilient opponent as Goryachkina with Black underscored both Vaishali’s preparation and her ability to make strong decisions under pressure. As the tournament enters its decisive phase, attention now turns to whether Sindarov can maintain his lead and whether Vaishali can convert her momentum into a historic triumph.
