Strong Competition Across 8 Cities in the School Sports Chess Regional Tournaments
The School Sports Chess Regional Tournaments were completed simultaneously in eight cities—Tokat, Batman, Mersin, Nevşehir, Bolu, Erzurum, Kütahya, and Yalova—between April 1 and 5, 2026. Bringing together school teams from different parts of Türkiye, the event saw nearly 3,000 players take their seats at the boards. In rounds that started at the same time, the young chess players delivered notable performances while battling not only their opponents, but also time management and the pressure of team competition.
Regional tournaments remain one of the most important chess stops on the school sports calendar. Events like these are valuable not only for their final standings, but also for how students reflect discipline of thought, patience, planning, and decision-making through competition. Core chess elements such as opening preparation, finding the right plan in the middlegame, and reducing the margin for error in the endgame highlighted the visible progress of the young players in every round.
The matches being played simultaneously in eight different cities once again demonstrated how widely chess has spread across the country. While the games, carried on with the same excitement in different locations, showed how much stronger the rivalry between school teams has become, the organizational structure also stood out. The playing hall setup, the pace of the rounds, and the synchronized progress of the matches offered clear signs that chess now has a more institutional and broader place within school sports.
All players who competed throughout the tournament deserved applause for their effort and sportsmanship. While the teams that finished among the top places stood out with successful performances, one of the event’s most valuable outcomes was the stronger bond young people built with chess. Broad-based regional events supported by the Turkish Chess Federation continue to serve as an important training ground for developing the strong players of the future.
